Baby, it’s cold outside but don’t let that stop you!

Chances are if you are reading this you live in the Midwest and if you don’t, lucky you!  As much as we (me) would like to hibernate and emerge in the spring, that’s just not an option.  Its so important, especially this time of year, to stay active and get outside for some fresh (cold) air.

Before we go further and in the spirit of full disclosure, I am writing this with the ultimate goal of convincing myself to get over it (I HATE being cold) and get outside to run.  It is not from the perspective of a diehard, year-long runner, more like a fair weather wanna-be who’s trying to change.  I ran my first half marathon in the heat of the summer so this is unchartered territory for me.  After a bit of research, here are my top five tips to convince myself that I will survive despite the cold.

1.  Get the right gear.  This may sound vain, but I’m way more likely to get out there and run if I feel like I look good.  Now I’m sure the reality of how I look is far different than the graceful image I have in my mind, but its all about looking the part and being comfortable.  (Actually, I’ve seen pictures and its not pretty but that’s beside the point).  Anyway, dressing in layers with a good base layer are key.  Choose tighter fitting clothes made from a wicking fabric.  Don’t forget gloves, hat and thick warm socks.  If you are running when its dark outside, which is sadly much of a winter day, don’t forget reflective gear!  I promise you’ll warm up once you get going and probably sweat!

I think I’ll be adding this to my christmas list!  (Brooks Essential Running Jacket from amazon.com

And I’m pretty sure I *need* these pants. (Brooks Utopia Thermal Pants from amazon.com)

2. Schedule it.  Don’t leave it up to chance.  I was amazed at my progress over the summer.  Its largely because my running days and distances were scheduled in advance.  I didn’t have to think about it and I didn’t bother coming up with excuses.  I like checklists so adding running to list and being able to cross it off is a great motivator.

3. Set a goal.  I’m so much more likely to stick with running when I have a goal/race on the calendar (see tip #2!).  It feels less like a decision (should I run today?) and more like a necessity (I have to run if I don’t want to embarrass myself).  Find a list of local events at active.com.

4. Find a running buddy.  This is so critical!  Its amazing how quickly the miles go by when you have someone to talk to.  Not to mention, running with a buddy is much safer.  Looking for some organized runs? Check out fleetfeetmadison.com.  They have free weekly group runs for all running abilities.

5. Wear a tutu.  I’m not going to lie.  Wearing a tutu makes all the difference! ;)

Thanks, Laura and Lori! I wouldn’t have finished the Jingle Bell Run without you!

I hope I’ve motivated you to get out there this winter and just maybe, myself too.  What are your cold weather running tips?
